Shanghai Foreign Language School (SFLS) is a seven-year boarding secondary school. The main campus is located in Hongkou District, Shanghai, covering an area of 33 mu with a total building area of 22,508 square meters. Surrounded by greenery, the campus offers a beautiful environment and complete teaching, activity, and living facilities, fully meeting the growth and development needs of teachers and students.

Directly under the Ministry of Education, SFLS was one of the first seven foreign language schools established after the founding of the People's Republic of China under the direct care of Premier Zhou Enlai (the other six schools established at the same time are Changchun Foreign Language School, Wuhan Foreign Language School, Tianjin Foreign Languages School, Nanjing Foreign Language School, Sichuan International Studies University Affiliated Foreign Language School (commonly known as Chongqing Foreign Language School), and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies Affiliated Foreign Language School). It is a "Shanghai Key Middle School" designated by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. In 2009, it was awarded the title of "National Demonstration School for Foreign Language Teaching and Research in Primary and Secondary Schools" and has been repeatedly named a Shanghai Advanced School for Moral Education and a Demonstration School for Student Code of Conduct. When Tsinghua University announced its list of recommended schools for the 2013 "New Century Leading Plan," the school was granted recommendation quotas, allowing recommended students to bypass the written examination and enjoy a 60-point admission discount upon passing the interview.

Since its inception, the school has shouldered the heavy responsibility of cultivating foreign language and diplomatic reserve talents for the country. Adhering to the purpose of "serving the development of the motherland and the progress of humanity," promoting the school motto of "Self-improvement, Sincerity, and Far-reaching Ambition," and insisting on the philosophy of "student-oriented development, focusing on both character and talent," SFLS implements quality education and is committed to cultivating international reserve talents who are "proficient in foreign languages, balanced in arts and sciences, composite, high-level, and high-quality."

Superior Foreign Language Teaching

The school is renowned for its professional foreign language teaching. It offers foreign language courses in six languages: English, German, French, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish, and implements small-class teaching. In terms of language teaching curriculum and training systems, the school has always focused on the transformation of knowledge into ability and the integration of language and culture. It continuously explores the combination of monolingual and multilingual abilities, conducts experiments in "one major and two minors" and "dual foreign language majors," and undertakes the responsibility of cultivating scarce multilingual talents for the country. The school has created projects such as multilingual interpretation tests and Model United Nations simultaneous interpretation conferences, providing diverse assessment and practice platforms for students' multilingual learning.

Focus on Comprehensive Development

While highlighting its foreign language education characteristics, the school is committed to cultivating the overall development of students' comprehensive qualities in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. Each semester, nearly 80 enrichment courses are offered, covering fields such as "Foreign Language and Culture," "Science, Technology, Information, and Economics," "Fitness and Art Appreciation," "Comprehensive Cultural Knowledge," and "Subject Enrichment Competitions." The school advocates for autonomous and experiential learning to achieve the coordinated development of foreign language proficiency and comprehensive quality.

SFLS is the president school and council chair school of the National Foreign Language School Work Research Association. The current principal is Du Yuehua. The school has seven grades, 31 classes, over 1,600 students, and more than 300 teachers and staff. The school has an international department and has been awarded the title of "Base for International Promotion of Chinese Language in Primary and Secondary Schools" by the Office of the Chinese Language Council International (Hanban).
