#5695. World Cup

Statistics

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar concluded on December 18. As a long-standing event that began in 1930, it has now spanned 22 editions. This quadrennial football feast is a glorious time and a memory of youth that has accompanied countless football players and fans around the world as they grow up.

As a new fan, Little M knew almost nothing about football before this World Cup. However, encouraged by his friends, he decided to join the big family of fans. Before the tournament, Little M learned a bit about the World Cup and discovered that the main tournament is divided into the group stage and the knockout stage. The knockout stage is particularly exciting, featuring the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and the Final. A single loss means immediate elimination, and only the team that wins every match can lift the trophy. Therefore, Little M thought that winning the World Cup is undoubtedly the pinnacle of the football world, and whether a team can advance from the group stage to the knockout stage, and how far they go in the knockout stage, are also important indicators of a team's strength.

There are 32 teams participating in the World Cup main tournament, and even more teams unfortunately failed to qualify. With so many teams in the world, it is an overwhelming task for a beginner like Little M to learn about them one by one. Therefore, Little M decided to start with the five permanent members of the UN, which correspond to the following 5 teams: China, England, France, Russia, and the United States. It is worth mentioning that Scotland and Wales have also reached the World Cup main tournament, but given Little M's level of knowledge, he has clearly ignored them.

Subsequently, Little M carefully investigated the historical World Cup records of these 5 teams: England, France, and the United States have all reached the World Cup knockout stage at least 4 times in the last 30 years. Among them, France won the 1998 and 2018 World Cups; although they have had the experience of being eliminated after 2 losses in the group stage, it is enough to show their strength to the world. England's only World Cup title was in 1966, and their best result in recent years is reaching the semi-finals. The United States' best result in recent years is reaching the quarter-finals. The strength of these two teams should not be underestimated. Russia's first 3 World Cup journeys in the last 30 years were not smooth, as they were eliminated early after consecutive losses in the group stage, but they reached the knockout stage and the quarter-finals as hosts in 2018. China's strength is slightly inferior; their only appearance in the World Cup main tournament was in 2002, but they lost all three group stage matches and were unfortunately eliminated.

Just as countless fans have a "favorite team" in their hearts, Little M also hopes to choose a "strongest team" from these 5 teams to support in the future. After further research, he learned that there are various indicators to evaluate a team, and these teams seem to have their own strengths. How should one measure the "strongest"? After much thought, Little M decided to use the "fewest total number of losses in the World Cup main tournament" as the basis for measurement. After careful research and analysis, the "strongest team" in his heart is ready to be revealed.

Now, he wants to test you: can you guess which team is the "strongest team" in his heart?
